Pittsburgh PA Da Vinci Surgical System Injury Attorney
Da Vinci Surgical System Lawyers
The da Vinci Surgical System has recently been linked to serious injuries and harmful side effects. Marketed as a sophisticated robotic platform designed to expand a surgeon’s capabilities while offering an advanced, marginally invasive option for major surgeries, the da Vinci Surgical System has instead led its patients to endure burns, lesions, ruptures, and potentially fatal whole-body inflammation, otherwise known as sepsis. The injuries endured by many patients have left internal, external, and mental scars.
At Dallas W. Hartman, P.C., our defective surgical device attorneys have been researching the usage and subsequent adverse side effects of the da Vinci Surgical System since it was approved by the FDA and introduced to the market in 2000 by its manufacturer, Intuitive Surgical. We have interviewed several prospective clients over the years who have all complained of similar side effects and injuries that concur with medical reports.
Da Vinci Surgical System complaints exponentially growing
Two years ago, it was estimated that there were over 200,000 operations that utilized the da Vinci Surgical System worldwide. Today, researchers estimate that there have been at least 375,000 operations completed by the machine. The system’s most common uses are for hysterectomies and prostate removals, but the da Vinci Surgical System can be used for a variety of other types of surgeries as well. Other uses for the robotic device include: the removal of cancerous formations in the bladder, kidney, lungs, throat, prostate, rectum, and vagina. It has also been used in operations to cure endometriosis, obesity, valvular heart disease, uterine hemorrhaging, and benign muscle tumors that can cause heavy bleeding.
In addition to being used to cure the above issues, the da Vinci Surgical System has been used to bypass other surgeries, such as hysterectomies and prostatectomies. Its manufacturer promotes it as less invasive and more precise than other similar surgeries done by hand, but there are no studies to back these claims. Intuitive Surgical also claims that patients of the robotic device are able to enjoy shorter recovery times; however, victims of the device’s defects will tell you that the da Vinci Surgical System is certainly not without its dangers.
Complications surrounding the da Vinci Surgical System
Although the system has not yet been recalled, there are a growing number of complications that have recently been reported to the FDA. In 2011, there were at least 211 complaints about the system, and in 2012, there were at least 282 reports. In addition, between January and March of 2013, the FDA received more than sixty complaints. And the complaints vary in severity and body location. One recent report states that a number of lawsuits are being considered due to a crack in the system’s insulation that can allow streaming electrical currents to burn patients on and around the surgical area. One additional fear conveyed by physicians, and backed by current research, is that the device takes a great deal of practice to master and that surgeons’ inexperience with the system have caused debilitating side effects, some of which have been fatal.
Some other complications linked to a surgeon’s use of the da Vinci Surgical System include perforated blood vessels, small tears in vital organs, inflammation of the abdomen, hemorrhaging, intestinal diseases, painful bowel movements, severed ureters, and vaginal cuff rupturing. In a small percentage of cases, the use of a da Vinci Surgical System has led to patient deaths.
