Late last night, a fifth person died from injuries he suffered during a horrific car accident in South Bend Township, Armstrong County around 10:30 Wednesday night. The 34-year-old man was pronounced dead at 11 p.m. Thursday night at UPMC Presbyterian. Two more people remain in critical condition at UPMC Presby, including the 34-year-old's brother and another woman.
The accident happened along Route 156 near the Gobblers Run Road intersection right at the Gobblers Run runoff from Crooked Creek. The accident was said to happen at about 10:20 p.m. when the 19-year-old driver of a 2003 Ford Mustang came speeding around a bend, crossed the center double yellow line, and collided with a Chevrolet Lumina head on.
A man from a nearby home told police that he heard a loud screech and then his father yelled to him to call 911 because "someone was in an accident."
The driver of the Mustang, as well as his 15-year-old and 18-year-old passengers, were pronounced at the scene of the accident. The driver of the Lumina was also pronounced dead at the scene. Her three passengers, all in their thirties, were Life-Flighted by three different helicopters to UPMC. Route 156 was closed at Cemetery Hill Road for more than 8 hours after the accident.
Toxicology tests are still pending, but police do not believe drugs or alcohol had anything to do with the crash. Speed seems to be the ultimate factor, but Pennsylvania State Police from the Kittanning barracks are continuing to investigate.
