A 16-year-old girl from Indiana County died this past Sunday at a hospital in Pittsburgh. She was being treated for injuries she suffered during a car accident on April 18. The accident occurred when the vehicle she was in was being chased after her and the man driving the car were approached by police for possibly shoplifting at a local Wal-Mart. During the chase, the car she was in skidded off the road, overturned, and came to rest in a small pond.
The young lady was pronounced dead shortly before 5 p.m. Sunday at Allegheny General Hospital, but the cause of her death will likely not be determined for several weeks while hospital records are reviewed and the results of her toxicology report are processed, according to the Allegheny County Coroner's Office and a forensics team.
The Indiana County District Attorney told reporters on Monday that he will likely make an addendum to charges filed against the 21-year-old driver of the car to include vehicular homicide. The Indiana County man has already been charged with aggravated assault, accident involving a death, reckless endangerment, and fleeing an officer of the law, among other things.
Before the chase ensued, the 21-year-old man was driving himself and the 16-year-old victim in his gold Buick when police attempted to stop the two after responding to reports that the young lady had likely stolen merchandise from the White Township Wal-Mart along Route 286 at around 11 p.m. on April 18.
As the two sped away and police chased after them, the driver eventually spun out of control, crossed over a road, and drove up and over an embankment before flipping and settling on its roof in a 5-foot-deep pond on the side of the road. The driver was thrown from the car during the crash, but the victim was trapped as it filled with pond water. Police eventually were able to pull the girl from the vehicle, but she did not respond. She was Life-Flighted to AGH and taken off life-support on Sunday.
