Two people were injured on Saturday evening in a pedestrian accident in Erie when they were struck by a bus as they attempted to cross the street. Police told reporters that the two people were at the intersection of Tenth Street and State Street when the accident happened.
The two victims, one man and one woman, were apparently crossing Tenth Street when the bus driver failed to come to a complete stop and let them cross. The Erie Mass Transit Authority driver will be interviewed and drug tested, as per proper protocol, but no foul play is suspected.
First responders say that the man was more seriously injured than the woman, but that both were taken to UPMC Hamot to be checked out for injuries. Erie police will continue to investigate and speak to witnesses about how and why the accident occurred.
Winters can be harsh in Erie and this winter is no different. It gets dark earlier and the weather can make it more difficult to drive safely and pay attention to traffic as a pedestrian. Looking both ways and crossing the street only at crosswalks are lessons we learn as kids that should never be forgotten. Safety is a virtue that everyone should live by; whether walking, driving, or otherwise, paying attention to what's going on around you at all times will likely allow you to avoid accidents such as this one.
