Milk truck accident in Westmoreland County does major damage to home

A commercial tanker truck hauling at least six thousand gallons of milk tipped over on Thursday afternoon and collided with a home near Hunker Borough, Westmoreland County, just west of New Stanton.

State police told reporters that the accident happened when the driver of the truck attempted to manipulate a sharp bend at a high rate of speed, causing the truck to overturn, crash into a home, and spill its contents all over the residents' property.

The family was home at the time of the accident, but were able to escape without injury. A son of the homeowners told police that his parents were getting ready to sit down for supper when they heard and felt a deafening boom. The truck ended up just a few feet from where they were sitting. First responders said it was a miracle that no one was injured. The driver of the tanker truck wasn't injured either.

PA State Police told reporters that they called the Pennsylvania Department of Environment Protection because of the milk spill. The owners are afraid that although freezing temperatures have pests hibernating, once the weather warms up and the milk thaws it will likely attract thousands of pesky creatures from all over the rural town.

Speeding drivers has been a growing concern of local residents over the years, telling reporter that Sportsman Road in particular has two sharp curves that come up on a driver quickly if he or she is not ready for them. They also say that the 40 mph signs are rarely followed and never enforced. Police are continuing to investigate the accident. The driver of the truck has not yet been charged with any crimes. The homeowners are not sure how much damage was done to their home, but estimate that it may be tens of thousands of dollars.
