A Niles, Ohio man is dead from a two-vehicle accident that occurred during the early hours of Friday morning in Howland Township, Ohio, according to Ohio State Police.
The Highway Patrol reports that the Niles, Ohio man died from injuries sustained during an accident on Friday morning at around 1 a.m. in Howland. State Route 82 was covered with snow and some ice when the 54-year-old man was travelling eastward. Police say he was near the North River Road overpass when he was smashed into, head-on, by a 2005 Dodge Caravan. Police say the man driving the Caravan is a resident of Warren, Ohio.
The Warren man told officials that he lost control of his minivan due to snow and ice and slid directly into the path of oncoming traffic. The departed man is said to have died at the hospital from the injuries he sustained in the accident. The man driving the Dodge was treated, but was not seriously injured. Police are continuing to investigate.
Snow and ice covered roads should mean one thing: SLOW DOWN. Especially at night when visibility is poor and animals tend to cross our highways more frequently, it is extremely important to take your time when travelling. Not every accident is avoidable, but by curtailing your speed and allowing squalls to pass before you proceed, accidents like this one are much less likely to happen to you and the ones you love.
