Pennsylvania State Police from Kittanning are currently searching for the driver of a hit-and-run accident that happened around 5:30 p.m. on Saturday evening on Route 28 in O'Hara Township. Although no injuries have yet been reported, police say the hit-and-run driver damaged at least three vehicle and other personal property.
Police report that a case of confused driving looked to be the initial cause of the accident, but that the hit-and-run driver made matters much worse when he didn't never stopped to stop to exchange insurance information or check for damages. Authorities say that a 81-year-old man from Pittsburgh was driving his Cadillac on Fox Chapel Road, attempting to get on to Route 28 South, when he accidentally entered the off-ramp. Police say another man, a 51-year-old from Indiana, was travelling south on Route 28 and slowed his Honda SUV when he saw the 81-year-old man attempting to turn around on the ramp, so as to avoid a collision. However, an unidentified man in a Chevy Silverado, who police say was driving too fast and tailgating the Honda, rear-ended the SUV.
State police report that witnesses say the Silverado then exited Route 28, driving over a curb and into someone's yard, causing major property damage. Witnesses say the driver then jumped out of the Silverado and fled the scene on foot. Police have said that they will be charging the 81-year-old man with careless driving, but that the driver of Silverado will be charged to the full extent of the law if and when he is caught.
Police say that this chain of events is synonymous with intoxicated drivers who leave the scene of an accident before police arrive. They will continue to investigate and speak to witnesses, noting that although they will not likely be able to prove the man was under the influence, they will charge him with all possible offenses and that jail time is a possibility.
