Pedestrian hit by 17-year-old driver in Mt. Lebanon

A man was seriously injured in a pedestrian accident after being struck by a Jeep Liberty in Mount Lebanon a week ago. The man was taken to the hospital and was last reported in critical condition.

The driver of the Jeep Liberty, a 17-year-old boy, has not been charged as police continue to investigate and speak to witnesses. The accident took place on the 700 block of Washington Road in the heart of Mt. Lebanon around 8:30 at night on November 19.

Mt. Lebanon officials have said that at this time the 17-year-old driver has not been charged, but police are still investigating. After the man was stabilized, he was taken to Mercy Hospital where he was treated for serious trauma to the head. However, there is still no word on his health.

Police could not say much about the driver because he is a minor, but did say that he is not a native resident of Mt. Lebanon. Witnesses' stories have varied and some say there was nothing the boy could do to avoid the man.

It is not yet known for sure if the boy was speeding, but the man who was hit was not using the crosswalk and was said to be wearing dark clothing. The unofficial cause of the accident at this point is that the driver "didn't see" the pedestrian.

Police plan on reconstructing the scene of the accident and say that they have spoken to a good number of bystanders, but may need to interview some witnesses again before they make any final rulings about what happened.

While pedestrians are supposed to avoid jaywalking, drivers are always responsible for the actions of their vehicles unless it malfunctions due to the negligence of the manufacturer. As night falls upon us earlier and road conditions can be disturbed due to inclement weather, please be cautious as a driver and a pedestrian. Pay attention to detail, follow speed limits, and always look both ways before you cross.
