In some regions of the United States, a phrase commonly heard when summer arrives is “it’s not the heat, it’s the humidity.” To combat this, during these summer months, many homes throughout the country, including those in Western Pennsylvania, turn on the air conditioner and the dehumidifier. Individuals who purchased a dehumidifier at Sears should be aware that certain Kenmore dehumidifiers have been recalled by the retailer. The recent recall announcement is actually a follow-up to one issued last year regarding the defective product.

The problem consumers experienced with the machine is that electrical shorts can, and have, led to fires. In addition to property damage of more than $300,000, such fires have also inflicted bodily harm. Reports indicate that one individual suffered severe burns on a foot when a fire broke out. In addition, some people have complained of suffering from smoke inhalation.

In total, close to 800,000 humidifiers are included in the recall. The defective products, which were actually manufactured between 2003 and 2005, encompass several different styles featuring capacities of 35, 50 and 75 pints. The reason the announcement of the recall is being made again is reportedly due to two factors. First, the retailer received only a small response to the initial recall announcement. Second, since the first recall was announced, additional fires have occurred.

When someone is hurt while using a dangerous or defective product, it may be possible to file a products liability lawsuit against the parties responsible for it being sold to unsuspecting consumers.
