Most days throughout the state of Pennsylvania, different modes of transportation interact with little of no trouble in the quest to deliver riders to their destinations. Unfortunately, one day late last month an incident occurred involving a train and a bus which resulted in injuries to several riders and left another dead. The collision took place in Butler County.
The bus involved in the accident was actually one from the county's BART fleet. For some reason the bus was positioned at a crossing located on Maple Avenue at the same time that at freight train was moving along the track. The train struck the bus and before pushing it along the track several yards, cause the bus to spin around.
Following the morning crash, authorities tried to piece together what caused the incident to occur. While a foggy atmosphere could have contributed to the collision a reenactment of the incident was conducted. The occupants of the bus were apparently seniors and individuals with special needs who were on their way to an area program that is focused on helping those in those demographics live life independently and with confidence. The individual who died in the incident was a 91-year-old woman. She apparently suffered head trauma and despite receiving medical treatment at an area hospital, did not make it. A total of 10 other individuals were hurt in the crash. Whether the family of the woman who died will decide to take legal action in a civil court via a wrongful death lawsuit remains to be seen.
