Russell Brand is known as many things to Pittsburgh area residents, including being an actor, comedian and former husband of pop singer Katy Perry. It appears now however that he can add another thing to that list-defendant in a civil personal injury lawsuit.
The funnyman has been sued for an incident that took place in January of last year. Brand was reportedly behind the wheel of a vehicle that struck a man on a road in Los Angeles. The man was not in a vehicle at the time. As a result of the collision the pedestrian claims to have hurt his arm, hand and hip. It is not clear what caused the accident to occur.
As readers of this blog are likely aware, the outcome of pedestrian accidents can be devastating. When a person who lacks protection of any type is struck by a much heavier, automobile, it is not uncommon for the pedestrian to suffer serious injuries such as broken bones, lacerations and trauma to the brain or spine. In the most tragic circumstances the individual may be killed.
The injured party in this case initially filed a lawsuit against Brand in October of last year. At that time, he sought $25,000 in damages. This time around however, he has increased the amount sought to $185,000. It is not clear what caused the change.
How this case will be resolved remains to be seen. It is possible that the parties could work together to reach a settlement. If however, that does not happen, it could go to court and be left to a jury to decide.
