There are many different situations in which a collision of motor vehicles can occur including head on crashes due to cars crossing centerlines. Another situation that can lead to a crash involves a vehicle turning from one road onto another. Under these circumstances it is possible that a car could be t-boned by oncoming traffic or struck from behind in a rear-end accident. The latter situation arose in an accident that occurred in Sandy Township late last week.
The collision occurred where Hungry Hollow Road crosses SR 255. Authorities indicate that a vehicle attempting to turn off SR 255 onto Hungry Hollow Road was struck from behind before the turn was complete. The vehicle that was hit contained three individuals: the 24-year-old man driving the vehicle, his passenger, a 22-year-old pregnant woman, and the woman's child who is 2-years-old.
As a result of the accident the woman reportedly went into premature labor. Both she and her child were taken to area hospitals for treatment. Neither of the drivers appear to have been hurt in the incident.
The man who was in the vehicle who struck the turning car was believed to have been intoxicated at the time of the crash. Police officers who arrived at the scene of the accident conducted several sobriety tests on the man. When he did not pass any of them he too was taken to a hospital, not for medical treatment, but rather to have his blood drawn so that his blood alcohol content could be checked.
While the child's injuries were characterized as minor, there is no further information on the condition of the pregnant woman. Should she or her unborn child experience serious injuries as a result of the apparent drunk driving accident, it is possible the man driving the vehicle that hit them could be facing more than just criminal charges. He could be named a defendant in a civil personal injury lawsuit as well.
