Parents throughout the Pittsburgh area will likely want to take note. Another children's product has been recalled for dangers it potentially poses to babies using it. It is possible that the product, Fisher-Price's Newborn Rock 'N Play Sleeper, could develop pockets of mold. The mold could cause the babies to develop infections and possibly experience other respiratory issues. The recall was issues by Fisher-Price.
The sleeper is described as a metal frame which holds a seat made of plastic. The seat has a cover made of fabric that is removable. When the product gets wet and it not allowed to dry properly, the mold can accumulate. Thus far there have been 600 reports of this occurring. In 16 situations, babies have reportedly become ill due to the mold.
In addition to respiratory problems, some infants were found to have developed hives and coughs. It is possible that many more instances of this could have occurred as in total, 800,000 of the seats were purchased by consumers throughout the country, beginning in September of 2009.
Though in many recall situations consumers are instructed to return the product to the manufacture or contact the manufacturer for a repair kit. Neither of these are being offered in this instance. Instead consumers are encouraged to contact Fisher-Price for information on how to properly clean the sleeper.
While it is alarming for any child to suffer any type of injury due to a product it is fortunate that no one was seriously injured. Whether any consumers decide to seek monetary compensation remains to be seen.
