One of the basics drivers throughout the Pittsburgh area need to be aware of when they get behind the wheel is the importance of being aware of their surroundings. Watching for other vehicles and individuals riding bicycles or walking is vital to the safety of all on the roads. Motor vehicle drivers also need to be aware of motorcyclists.
While many in the state of Pennsylvania have put their motorcycles away for the season, there are still some riders who are taking advantage of days in which the weather allows them to ride. Sadly, one of those individuals, a 41-year-old man recently died in a collision with a car. The incident occurred shortly before midnight in South Huntingdon.
Authorities indicate that the collision occurred when a car turned in front of the motorcyclist. Unable to stop, the motorcycle slammed into the vehicle, launching the rider from the bike. Despite the protective gear, including a helmet the motorcyclist was wearing, the injuries he suffered were so serious that he died at the scene.
It is not clear what caused the 23-year-old driver of the car to turn in front of the motorcyclist. To try to determine how the accident unfolded, an accident reconstruction team will reportedly be employed. These teams are often able to make that determination after spending time at the scene by analyzing information such as measurements of skid marks and inspecting the vehicles involved.
The outcome of the police investigation will likely determine whether criminal charges will be pursued. In addition, it could have bearing on whether a civil wrongful death lawsuit will be filed by family members of the deceased motorcyclist.
