Memorial Held For Boy Killed In Lawrence Co. Accident

In Lawrence County, there was a fatal accident that took place. Two boys, ages seven and nine, were hit by a yellow pickup truck while playing outside on the front doorstep of the one boy's grandmother's home.

Octavius Stone, the seven-year-old, was killed after being hit by the truck. The nine-year-old, Emil "Ozzy" Osbourne Velez, will be left with physical and emotional scars.

The New Castle Police arrested the 66-year-old man, Virgil Coonfare, on DUI charges, aggravated assault and homicide by vehicle. The police reported that Coonfare barreled through the sidewalk and onto the yard, hitting the boys on the steps. They also said he continued driving after the accident and that he could not even walk straight because he was intoxicated. Ozzy tried to save his friend. He said that he tried to push Octavius out of the way but the truck hit both of them.

Ozzy's grandmother, Barbara Brown, said she was there the final moments of Octavius' life and that she knows how easily her grandson could have been taken as well. Ozzy is suffering injuries to his left leg and his neck.

The mother of Octavius, Chenet Jones attended the memorial that was held the Tuesday after her son's death. She was surrounding by her family, friends and pastor as she looked on with a heavy heart. She talked about her beautiful baby who was just outside playing minding her own business when his life was taken. Ozzy was able to attend the memorial but had to use a walker while still recovering from his injuries.
