Of the 49 patients who received injected steroids in Michigan, 45 of them have been confirmed as having contracted fungal meningitis. The Michigan Department of Community Health states that the meningitis is to blame for the five deaths one of which received treatment from a clinic in Indiana. The number of cases in Michigan has been climbing for 13 consecutive days. The death of a 62-year-old man is the second in Washtenaw County, he was seen at St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor.
The first death from complications caused by fungal meningitis in Michigan was a 78-year-old woman, announced on October 9. The New England Compounding Company, responsible for the contaminated steroids is now under investigation and has stopped all production. A recall of three lots of tainted steroids was issued in September.
