The amount of cases reported of fungal meningitis has risen for the fifth consecutive day. Since the Centers for Disease and Prevention released the number of cases and deaths it has done nothing but increase. 13 people have died: six in Tennessee, three in Michigan, two in Florida, one in Maryland and one in Virginia. The outbreak is linked to a fungus that contaminated vials of an injected steroid, which patients were receiving for back pain.
The New England Compounding Company, responsible for the distribution of the drugs, has recalled all of its products. They also have stopped productions while under investigation by companies such as the Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Prevention.
