The Food and Drug Administration is investigating the New England Compounding Company, who is responsible for distributing the contaminated steroids linked to the fungal meningitis outbreak. They believe that maybe two drugs are connected to the outbreak, the steroids methylprednisolone and triamcinolone. The patients with the fungal meningitis had received injected steroids for back pain that contained a fungus. . The fungus that is being found in most of the vials is mold, or Exserohilum rostratum. Of all the cases reported most were fungal meningitis but two are peripheral joint infections.
The NECC is recalling all of its products and has stopped all production while being investigated. All three of the lots that were distributed, around 17,000 vials were recalled. They are unsure of how many unused vials are still in circulation.
