Ohio man left in vegetative state awarded $1.25 million

Injuries that occur as a result of doctors' errors and medical negligence forever change the lives of the individual affected and their family members. Medical errors can render individuals who were previously able-bodied and cognizant bound to a wheelchair and severely impaired.

The family of an Ohio man was recently awarded a sum of $1.25 in a medical malpractice lawsuit against Ohio State University's Wexner Medical Center. In the lawsuit, the man's mother described how during 2009, her son underwent surgery at the medical facility for testicular cancer.

During the procedure to remove a cancerous mass, the man when into cardiac arrest and began to hemorrhage. Due to the trauma and injuries sustained while in the care of OSU physicians, the man suffered severe brain damage and is now in a vegetative state.

As part of the settlement, the medical facility was ordered to directly pay the man's family $865,000. Additionally, the amount of $385,000 must be paid to a holding company that will disperse payments to the family to help aid in the man's care.

Sadly, this case demonstrates an extreme case of medical malpractice and the very serious implications doctors' errors can have on an individual's life and those of their family members. The monies awarded in this matter will help provide for the care of the man who will require round-the-clock care. The settlement amount will also likely help defray costs accrued by family members who have likely endured emotional distress and pain over the loss of their loved one as they knew him.
