In addition to its primary purpose, the design of many of today's products for babies and young children takes into account other needs of it users. With the large size of many of these products, space saving is one of those considerations. The feature of a product designed to help with space saving should not make the product dangerous however.
A recall was recently issued for approximately 455,000 high chairs that were imported by Pennsylvania company, Artsana USA Inc., and sold in the United States for over seven years, between January 2005 and July 2012. The Chicco Polly High Chairs are being recalled because 21 children were hurt after falling against pegs on the back chair legs that are designed to serve as hooks to stow the tray when not in use. Injuries reported include bruises, lacerations and a scratched cornea.
The dangerous product was sold by retailers for between $100 and $150 throughout the country both in stores and online. The list of retailers selling the popular high chair in the store includes: Babies R Us, Burlington Coat Factory, Buy Buy Baby, Shopko and Toys R Us.
Individuals who are currently using the product should be aware that the issue does not exist when the tray is not in used and has been placed upon the pegs. As a part of the voluntary recall, Chico is providing kits to cover the dangerous pegs, free of charge. The product does not need to be returned to the place of purchase and can be used once the repair kit has been utilized.
