During the summer months many Pittsburgh area families take advantage of the nice weather and the kids' time off of from school to take family vacations. Destinations located on lakes that are frozen over during the winter months are popular choices. Unfortunately, fatal accidents don't ever take vacations. The family of a Pittsburgh teen is all too aware of this.
The 16-year-old girl died after being involved in car accident while on vacation on an island that is part of another state. The teen was a passenger in a car driven by another 16-year-old who is also from Pittsburgh. The relationship between the two is not clear.
Police believe the rollover crash may have occurred when the driver of the vehicle attempted to avoid hitting a deer just before 11:00 p.m. Both of the occupants of the vehicle were hurt in the crash. The passenger died at the scene.
After the incident the driver of the car had to be airlifted by the United States Coast Guard so that she could be taken off the island to a hospital. While the extent and severity of her injuries is unknown, she has reportedly since been released from the hospital.
Beaver Island, located off the coast of Michigan is not often the scene of fatal motor vehicle accidents. The area sheriff could not remember the last time a death due to a car crash occurred on the island. An investigation, including a reconstruction of the accident, is being conducted. The conclusion of the investigation will of course do nothing to bring back the teen whose life ended all too soon. It may however provide closure to the incident.
