Late last month two Subarus and a truck were involved in a crash outside of Pittsburgh on Route 30. According to a police officer who responded to the accident scene, a red Subaru that was apparently attempting to pass the truck at a high rate of speed ran off the road. When it did so, rather than coming to a stop, it continued to travel across lanes, into traffic coming from the opposite direction. It then crashed into another Subaru that was coming toward it from the opposite direction.
After the initial collision, the second Subaru was involved in a car accident with a vehicle that was driving behind her. The driver of that Subaru, a 57-year-old woman was stuck in her car for sometime as rescue workers worked to free her from her seriously damaged car. When she was finally able to get out, a helicopter flew her to a hospital in Pittsburgh.
The driver of the first Subaru was an 18-year-old man. With him at the time of the crash was a 21-year-old woman. The force of the impact caused her to be ejected through the window. It's not clear if she was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. Both she and the teen who was behind the wheel were also flown to a hospital in Pittsburgh.
An investigation will likely determine whether anything besides speed contributed to the incident. Those findings will likely also determine whether any criminal or civil cases will arise.
