Hit-and-run accidents are much more common than most want to acknowledge and those who keep up with the news in the Pittsburgh area likely agree that it is all too common to encounter a news story regarding the matter. Late last month, another hit-and-run motor vehicle accident was reported. The car accident which involved a pedestrian, occurred in Squirrel Hill.
Police indicated that the accident occurred in the morning, around 9:30 a.m., as a 68-year-old man made his way across the intersection of Wilkins Avenue and Wightman Street. As he crossed the street, a car reportedly hit and then continued on its way up Wightman Street. As the vehicle left the scene, witnesses indicated that it sped up.
The pedestrian was seriously injured in the incident. Though specifics regarding the type of injuries he suffered in the accident are not known, he was transported to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital. There his condition was reportedly listed as critical.
Immediately following the accident the car was still unaccounted for. Witnesses indicated that it was either maroon or red and the force of the vehicle's impact caused a mirror to be knocked off the vehicle.
There are likely many reasons that someone flees the scene of an accident after hitting someone with their car. One reason is that the driver is intoxicated and fears he or she will get in trouble for drunk driving. In other cases, the person behind of the wheel of the car involved in a crash may be driving without a drivers' license or have outstanding warrants and face being arrested if caught. Whatever the reason a driver has for leaving the scene of an accident, most would likely agree that no reason excuses such behavior.
