Route 51, at the Southland Four Seasons Shopping Center, was the scene of a series of alleged drunk driving accidents on Mother's Day 2012. The alleged DUI driver was on a license suspension at the time of the Pennsylvania car crashes. The alleged perpetrator remains a guest at the Allegheny County Jail, awaiting trial for the multiple accidents.
A Pleasant Hills police officer noted that the driver would "hit something and just turn and go a different way." Police stated that the alleged drunk driver began by hitting a parked car at a nearby auto body shop before striking several more vehicles at the shopping plaza.
While police were trying to stop the runaway pickup truck, the driver just kept going, striking another vehicle head on. The carnage did not stop until the truck struck a guard rail at a gas station driveway. The police charged the 29-year old driver with DUI, reckless endangerment, fleeing from police and driving with a suspended license.
In all, 10 people suffered personal injuries from the various car crashes. First responders and rescue personnel transported some of the victims to Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. The other injured people were taken to Jefferson Hospital.
Many crash victims appeared at a recent court date for the driver, delivering numerous angry and concerned comments to the defendant's lawyer. For example, one victim said, "A license suspension isn't sufficient. He was already on a license suspension. He was on a license suspension before."
If the driver is convicted on one or more of the charges he faces, what do you feel would be appropriate punishment? Do you have any suggestions to keep drivers with suspended licenses off Pennsylvania roadways?
