ABC News is reporting that the New Hampshire hospital lab technician indicted last week for infecting 31 people with Hepatitis C might have infected "tens of thousands" of patients in at least 13 hospitals in 8 states.

The traveling lab tech, David Kwiatkowski, had allegedly been stealing syringes of Fentanyl intended for patients, injecting his own arm and then refilling those empty syringes with another liquid-like saline, and then putting the used syringes back into circulation. 

Since Kwiatkowski tested positive for Hepatitis C in June 2010, he passed it on to the hospital patients who were injected with his used, saline-filled syringes.  In addition, anyone who worked with Kwiatkoski at those 13 hospitals is at risk, not to mention their loved ones and the loved ones and caretakers of the people he infected.

Exeter Hospital, where he was finally caught, urged over 6,000 patients to get tested for Hepatitis C. These notifications have left possible victims rattled because many people can have Hepatitis C and show no symptoms.

According to ABC News "Kwiatkowski was arrested and indicted on July 19 for allegedly acquiring a controlled substance by fraud and tampering with a consumer product with "reckless disregard" for the risk of others, according to an affidavit filed in U.S. District Court for the District of New Hampshire."

This story hits home because in 2008, Kwiatkowski was fired from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center after he was found in an area to which he was not assigned. It is also reported that he was fired from an Arizona Hospital for drug use.
