Most residents of Pennsylvania probably remember last year's massive recall of Cantaloupe melon due to the fruit being contaminated with listeria. The dangerous product was sold throughout the nation and resulted many deaths. Earlier this week the fear of listeria contamination prompted another recall, this one of prepackaged salad distributed by Dole Fresh Vegetables to retailers in nine states including Pennsylvania.
While thus far no one has reported becoming sick as a result of the product, the voluntary recall was prompted by the discovery of listeria found during tests performed on random samples by the United States Food and Drug Administration. The discovery, in Dole Hearts of Romaine, was reportedly an isolated incident. In total, 2,598 cases of the produce are included in the recall.
Despite no reports of illness, anyone who has bags of the salad in their refrigerator is being instructed to dispose of the produce immediately.
Food is a necessary part of every human's life. In particular, leafy green vegetables are touted by many as some of the best for one's body. As a result of the convenience bagged salads provide, many purchase the product thinking that they are taking good care of themselves. As this recall illustrates, under some circumstances, even healthy foods can be bad for one's health.
Should anyone turn up sick due to this, or any other, tainted product, that person may be able to seek financial compensation for their illness. A personal injury lawyer who handles products liability cases can help determine the best way to proceed.
