While there are of course many different types of transportation available to residents of the Pittsburgh area, quite a few people rely on motor vehicles to get from one place to another. In addition to transporting individuals, many motor vehicles are used to transports things such as mail. Just as cars transporting people are subject to being involved in car accidents, so too are vehicles transporting goods and other objects.
An 87-year-old woman was recently made aware of this first hand. She was hurt when a mail truck hit her as she was getting her mail.
The woman's neighbor said that her usual habit was to wait inside her home until after the mail truck was gone, before venturing across the street to get her mail. On this day however, the woman was in her yard when the mail arrived, talking with someone who had some work on her house. Accordingly, she went to get the mail before the truck was gone.
The accident occurred after the mail carrier realized that he had forgotten to leave everything addressed to her and he backed the truck up. When he did so, despite the fact that he was reportedly looking in his rear view mirror, he hit. He said he did not see her in the mirror.
The mail carrier became aware that someone or something was there after feeling the truck make contact with an object.
Neighbors to the woman quickly came to her aid alerted by a dog barking. One woman, who happens to be a nursing assistant at a local hospital ,stayed with the older woman until the ambulance arrived. While the nature of her injuries is not known, she was transported via a helicopter to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh. There she was reportedly listed in critical condition.
How this incident will ultimately end is unknown. The matter is being investigated and it is possible that those findings could lead to a civil personal injury lawsuit.
