With the arrival of summer comes the taste for summer sweet treats. One of the favorites throughout Butler County is ice cream. Aware of the sweet tooth that many Americans harbor, ice cream makers throughout the nation create a variety of flavors so that there is sure to be something for everyone. One of those ice cream makers is Unilever PLC, maker of the ever popular, Ben & Jerry's.
Those who have recently purchased certain sizes of the chocolate nougat crunch ice cream flavor should be aware of a recent recall. The ice cream maker issued a recall of the pint sizes because for some, it could be a dangerous product. Those at risk are individuals who are allergic to peanuts or tree nuts.
The reason behind the recall is that the ice cream packaging of that size of the product did not have allergen information included as required. Omitted from packages was the following phrase: "Allergy Information: Fudge covered wafer pieces have been manufactured on shared equipment that processes peanuts and tree nuts." The pint size is the only size included in the recall.
Though thus far the ice cream maker is not aware of anyone having sustained any injuries due to an allergic reaction, those who deal with this allergy every day, recognize the danger associated with exposure to peanuts or tree nuts. In the worst cases, the person's airway closes, making it impossible to breathe, sometimes leading to death.
There are many potential reasons a consumer product could be recalled. Packaging is one of those reasons. Hopefully, anyone who has allergies will learn about the recall. Those who have sustained an injury from the product could decide to file a products liability lawsuit.
