The state of Pennsylvania takes reckless driving that leads to fatalities very seriously. A 21-year-old man from the Pittsburgh region is learning just how seriously, firsthand. The man was previously convicted of a total of 11 charges that were related to a fatal accident that occurred in February 2010. Those convictions include involuntary manslaughter and homicide by vehicle.
The man was the driver of a car that reportedly left Interstate 376 and was launched over an embankment. He was the only survivor of the ensuing crash that killed the three passengers who were in the car with him. According to the electronic data recorder located within the car, it was traveling at the speed of 106 mph in the seconds before the crash caused the vehicle's air bags to deploy. The conviction came despite the defense's argument that the speed the tires registered was inflated due to the tires spinning as the vehicle flew through the air.
Now, that young man has been sentenced for his role in the crash. Earlier this week he learned that he will spend between 2 ½ and 6 years behind bars. While the families of the three friends who died in the incident are most likely glad that he is facing some consequences for his actions, the prison time will not bring their loved ones back.
This is also true of any civil lawsuits the family members of the deceased may file. While it is not clear if they have already filed a civil wrongful death lawsuit, it is an available option when the negligent behavior of another results in a death. While a successful lawsuit cannot undo the harm that has been done, the financial damages may make it easier for those left behind to move forward with their lives.
