Dogs play an important role in the lives of many people throughout the Pittsburgh metro area. For some, they are more than just a pet; they are another member of the family. Those dog lovers were likely upset to hear about a recent dog food recall. The dog food, made by Diamond Pet Foods, is being recalled because of the potential that it is a dangerous product, contaminated with salmonella.
In all, three of the company's types of dog food have been recalled. Last month, Diamond Naturals Lamb Meal & Rice and Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover's Soul Adult Light Formula were recalled. Now, the dry version of Diamond Puppy Formula has been recalled as well. In total, 12 states are affected by the recall. Pennsylvania is one of those states.
So far it does not appear that any dogs have fallen ill after eating the food. Nonetheless, the recall is worth paying attention to since the food involved in the recall was made in the same plant as dog food that resulted in dog deaths in 2005.
Another reason that pet owners should pay attention is the risk they have of contracting the illness should they either come in contact with the food or their dog contract it. Some symptoms of Salmonella are the same for both dogs as well as humans. Diarrhea, fever and vomiting on the part of either the pet or its owner could indicate the presence of the illness.
Anyone in possession of any of the recalled food is being cautioned against using it. Should any illness occur, they may want to see the assistance of a products liability attorney.
