There are a multitude of reasons why motor vehicle accidents occur in Pittsburgh. That said there are however several common driving maneuvers scenarios that are statistically more prone to result in a car accident.
Last week a 63-year-old woman was injured in an accident involving a car, a truck and a motorcycle in Marion Township. The accident reportedly occurred when the woman tried to make a left turn from Hartzell School Road onto Route 588. As she did so, her vehicle was hit by a tractor-trailer that was travelling down Hartzell School Road. After the first collision, a motorcycle that came upon the accident scene collided with the wreck.
The woman was injured in the incident and was transported to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh via helicopter. The nature of her injuries is not known but she was reportedly in critical condition a couple days after the crash.
Perhaps not surprisingly, the 58-year-old man who was on the motorcycle was injured as well. His leg was reportedly hurt in the collision. He was taken to UPMC Cranberry for treatment after which he was released.
As many likely suspected, the man who was driving the tractor-trailer was not hurt.
Left hand turns are a common situation where car accidents occur. Sometimes this is because the car trying to make the turn does not see the oncoming vehicle. Other times, the driver thinks that he or she can complete the turn before the oncoming car reaches that point in the road. Whatever the reason for the collision during a left hand turn, it can result in catastrophic injuries.
