Nursing Students injured while trying to help car crash victim on I-79

Three good Samaritans from Waynesburg University were injured earlier in the week after stopping along I-79 to help a car crash victim who fell asleep at the wheel. It is reported that the three nursing students jumped off an overpass when they saw a tractor trailer barreling toward them. One of the students was able to hang on to the overpass and pull himself to safety. The two other female students fell at least 50 feet onto a grassy hillside and were taken to Ruby Memorial. Both are currently listed in fair condition.

In our opinion the three nursing students are heroes and should be commended for making such a brave decision to help someone in need. This is just another reminder to drivers of the importance of being alert while driving.  The original accident happened because someone fell asleep at the wheel.  The three others were injured after jumping out of the way of a speeding truck.  All of these injuries could have been prevented.

At our office we have see too many situations where good Samaritans are injured by careless motorists while trying to help other accident victims. In these cases there are many places to turn for insurance coverage to help the selfless people who are injured while helping others. In this case the victims may be able to turn to the insurance of the motorist that they stopped to help because his negligence caused the victims to be in harm's way. In addition, the victims were forced off the overpass by a truck that may have been traveling at an unsafe speed. Finally, the injured good Samaritans' own underinsured and uninsured motorist coverage may offer additional help for the victims.
