Severed deer head to blame in fatal Pennsylvania accident

Most Pennsylvania residents realize that late fall and early winter is the time of year when it is most likely that a driver will be involved in a collision with a deer. What residents of the state may not realize is that Pennsylvania is the number one state when it comes to car accidents involving deer.

While there are of course times when occupants of cars walk away from a car accident involving a deer, other times the outcome can be tragic and result in death. The loved ones of a 70-year-old Pennsylvania woman have learned this first hand. The woman died after the head of a deer came through her windshield.

According to the police who investigated the Reynoldsville, Pennsylvania, accident, prior to hitting the woman's car, the deer first hit the car driving in front of her. The force of that collision caused the deer's head to be severed from its body and to launch into the air and hit the woman's car. After it made impact, the woman's vehicle continued on until it came to rest in a ditch.

Of the 1.5 million collisions between cars and deer throughout the nation each year, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more than 100 people die as a result. An additional 10,000 sustain varying levels of injuries.

The police who responded to the accident scene apparently determined the drivers of two other vehicles involved in the strange and tragic incident did not do anything wrong. Neither of the drivers will be charged with a crime.
