In an earlier post we wrote about the recall of Rolls-Royce Ghost Sedans due to a fire hazard. BMWs have also previously been recalled. Now, the owner of the brands, BMW, is recalling another of its brands, Mini Coopers, for the same reason.
As was the case in the previous recalls, there is a defect in the circuit board that controls the turbocharger cooling system. Should the defect cause the cooling system to fail, the water pump may smolder and the engine compartment could catch fire. This is true even though the cooling system in the Mini Coopers does not operate the same way as those found in the Rolls-Royce and BMWs that were previously recalled.
This recall which affects a total of 235,535 cars is not just a precaution. Throughout the world, thus far, there have been 81 reports of water pumps failing in the vehicles. Of those 81, four fires in engine compartments have occurred. Thankfully, the incidents have not caused any injuries or accidents.
The following models are included in the recall:
•· Mini Cooper Countryman S
•· Mini Cooper Clubman S
•· John Cooper Works high-performance versions of the Mini Cooper
•· Mini Cooper S hatchbacks and convertibles
Because the cooling systems in the various brands involved in the recall are different, BMW is currently trying to determine if the problems are a coincidence or related.
Dealers of the Mini Coopers are planning on replacing the water pumps found on the cars that have been recalled.
