The holiday season is upon us and bakers throughout Pennsylvania are serving their most delicious cookies, cakes and pies. For many consuming the sweet treats, nothing goes better with the desserts than a scoop of cold ice cream. Ice cream eaters throughout Pennsylvania need to beware however, as the process of dispensing the delicious accompaniment may result in a personal injury.
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, popular kitchen device retailer The Pampered Chef has issued a voluntarily recall of an ice cream scoop. The recall pertains to an ice cream scoop that is filled with liquid. It affects 20,000 of the utensils sold between July and September 2010.
Prompting the recall is the report that exposing the scoop to warm water can cause the cap and seal located at the handle's end to come apart. In some cases the cap and seal have ended up flying off the handle, hitting surrounding people or other objects.
All told, 22 reports of damage have been tallied. Sixteen of those have resulted in property damage to kitchen items. Another six have caused personal injuries such as bruises, cuts and redness.
While an ice cream scoop seems like a fairly safe utensil compared to say a knife, the reality is nearly any product can be defective. When someone is hurt due to a defective product, that person may be entitled to financial compensation for their injuries. If successful, a personal injury case may provide money to assist in a variety of things including medical bills and lost wages.
