For most mothers it is their worst nightmare. The thought of one’s child being injured is almost unbearable. Sadly a Pennsylvania woman witnessed her son being hurt in front of her eyes.
A mother and her toddler son were struck by a tractor-trailer earlier this month. The Lawrenceville accident took place around noon at the intersection of Butler Street and 40th street. According to Pittsburgh police, when the two were hit the truck was in the process of making a right turn from Butler onto the bridge located at 40th street. The truck drove up onto the curb. At the time the 27-year-old mother and her 1-year-old son, who was in a stroller, were waiting for the light to change so they could cross the street.
People at the scene indicated that it was possible that the mother did not see the truck in time to move out of the way. She was reportedly leaned over attending to her child when it occurred. Witnesses to the event said the young boy was either thrown from, or fell from the stroller. It was unclear whether his legs were at some point pinned under the truck’s tires.
Both sustained injuries in the incident. The young boy reportedly may have suffered internal injuries in addition to an injured leg. After the accident he was transported to Children’s Hospital. The boy’s mother was also hurt. Though her ankles and feet were injured in the accident she understandably declined treatment so that she could be with her son at the hospital.
The prognosis of both the mother and son is currently unknown.
