Traffic stops a routine part of most police officers' jobs in Pennsylvania. As is all too often reported on the news, officers are sometimes hit by a speeding car on a freeway after pulling a car over. Sometimes the speeding vehicle hits the cruiser in which the officer is sitting. In other, more tragic cases, the officer is hit while standing next to the car that has been pulled over or while walking back to his cruiser. These accidents can result in serious injuries. Of course an officer can be involved in a car accident when his or her cruiser is in motion as well.
Earlier this week a police officer in Philadelphia was injured in a car accident while he was working. The accident occurred at the intersection of Forrestal and 17th streets as the officer tried to stop a car. As the patrol car entered the intersection it hit a moving vehicle as well as a nearby parked car. It is unclear what cause the accident to occur.
After the accident the officer reportedly complained of neck and back pain. Accordingly, the officer was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania for treatment. People in the other vehicles involved were not injured in the incident.
Employees injured while working can file a workers' compensation claim to obtain finances to cover money lost while healing from the injuries sustained. While the laws regarding workers' compensation vary from state to state, all employers in Pennsylvania are required to carry an insurance policy that will cover employers who are injured.
