Car accidents can happen anytime one is driving, regardless of the time of day or why one is in a vehicle. One is not immune from a car accident because the vehicle they are driving is done in the course of everyday business.
A 51-year-old equipment operator in the York County Maintenance Office for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), died earlier this month after being involved in a single-car accident while working. The man was driving his PennDOT dump truck on Codorus Furnace Road the morning of August 15, when he came to a curve to the right in the road. As he approached the curve something happened and the truck left the road. The dump truck overturned and landed on its left side.
Though the driver was wearing his seat belt at the time of the accident, he was badly injured. Due to the position of the dump truck, it took nearly an hour and a half for rescuers to reach and extricate the driver. Once removed from the dump truck, he was taken to a hospital by helicopter where he later died. The injuries sustained have not been disclosed and the Pennsylvania State Police are investigating the accident to determine its cause.
The driver who was from Littlestown, had been employed by PennDOT since September 2000. He was married and had two daughters in college. Stephen Grimme, acting district executive for PennDOT Engineering District 8, expressed his sadness at the news and revealed plans for a fund to help the family with expenses.
