Boys and Girls Experience Different Concussion Symptoms

Last week we talked about the experience that a female teenager had when she suffered two concussions from club soccer play. This week new information has been released that compares the effects of the personal injury between boys and girls. Male and female teenagers that are in high school athletics suffer different concussive symptoms according to a new study.

The new study has found that girls are more likely to report greater sensitivity to noise and drowsiness in comparison to boys. Boys, on the other hand, are more likely to articulate confusion, disorientation and amnesia. The study's author says that girls who have suffered concussions may go undiagnosed because their symptoms of drowsiness or noise sensitivity may be attributed to other conditions or factors. Even though more boys play organized sports than girls, girls are more likely to suffer a concussion from sport play. In comparison to boys who play high school soccer, girls are almost twice as likely to suffer a concussion from the sport.

The study was conducted by a professor of pediatrics from the Ohio State University College of Medicine. In conducting the study, the professor and her colleagues from two other schools analyzed information from an internet database on high school sports injuries. The researchers reviewed concussive information from two school years at 100 high schools. Researchers looked at boys' sports including football, soccer, wrestling, baseball and basketball. They also looked at girls' sports including basketball, volleyball, softball and soccer. In addition to the recorded concussions, the study's authors also looked at what symptoms were recorded.
