Concerns grow over spike in Ohio motorcycle fatalities

More than 410,000 motorcycles are registered within the state of Ohio. This makes Ohio fifth out of 50 states for ridership. While traditionally a haven for motorcyclists, many riders around the state are questioning their safety after an increase in motorcycle accidents on Ohio's highways and roads.

Throughout central Ohio there has been a troubling trend upward in the number of motorcycle accidents and fatalities. So far during 2012 in one central Ohio County, six people have died in motorcycle accidents. In this same country during 2011, only one fatality was reported as a result of a motorcycle and car accident.

In most of the accidents involving motorcycles, the drivers of the cars and truck involved are at fault. Police contend that distracted driving is often the main cause of motorcycle accidents and caution all drivers to remain attentive and alert while behind the wheel.

The increase in fatal motorcycle accidents has raised concern among many riders. One veteran biker who has been riding for 20 years admitted he's recently considered selling his motorcycle because of safety concerns.

While the summer is over, many Ohio motorcyclists will continue to ride throughout the fall months and even into the winter. This means drivers of car and trucks need to continue to ensure they are watching for motorcycles and following proper safety laws with regard to changing lanes and tailgating.

In order to prevent motor vehicle accidents and ensure Ohio's roads are safe for drivers of cars and trucks and motorcyclists, it's important that all drivers remain alert and follow safe driving practices.
