Safe driving tips for drivers age 50 and older

This summer, record numbers of residents over the age of 50 will travel Ohio's roads and highways. Drivers age 50 and older face some unique challenges related to vision and hearing loss as well as possible physical ailments and delayed reaction time. In an effort to prevent car accidents, it's wise for drivers of all ages to brush up on motor vehicle and driving safety guidelines before hitting the road.

There are several safety precautions drivers should take before they even venture onto the highway. It's important to make sure both the motor vehicle and driver are both in good working condition. Drivers need to ensure they are well-rested and current with all medications and physicals. Likewise, prior to setting out on vacation, drivers should have their motor vehicles inspected to ensure everything is working properly.

In addition to ensuring a motor vehicle is in good working order, drivers should plan for unexpected events. For example, drivers should make sure they have a spare tire and jumper cables. Having a first aid kit and an emergency survival kit may also be helpful in an emergency situation.

When older drivers are driving long distances to reach summer vacation destinations, it's a good idea to take breaks. Getting out of the vehicle to walk around can help reinvigorate a driver's mind and body. It's also wise for drivers to avoid driving at nights and make sure they get adequate amounts of rest.

When traveling, it's always a good idea to make sure at least one other person knows your planned route and approximate arrival times. Likewise, drivers should check in with relatives and keep them updated on progress.
