While workers are injured on a regular basis throughout the state of Pennsylvania, the ones most commonly heard about are those concerning construction sites. Last month a worker was injured on the site of a parking garage renovation. The ramp was located in Latrobe near Weldon and Spring streets.
According to police who responded to the accident, a skid loader being used in the construction became stuck in-between the first floor and the basement of the garage when it somehow fell through the floor. At the time of the incident the construction vehicle was transporting a jackhammer.
After the incident, it took a little time to get the man out. Before he could be extracted, the concrete floor had to be stabilized. As the structure was being stabilized, an emergency responder climbed into the vehicle to attend to the man.
The nature and extent of the man's injuries is unknown. He was taken to via helicopter to UMPC Presbyterian located in Pittsburgh after first being taken to Excela Health Latrobe Hospital. Authorities indicate that he was able to move both his arms and legs when he left the scene of the accident.
When a worker is injured while working, he or she may be able to recover benefits via a workers' compensation claim. Successful claims provide money for things such as lost wages and medical bills. When the injuries result in permanent damage that makes it impossible for a worker to return to his or her job, there may be additional benefits available.
