Anytime a person operates a motor vehicle of any kind there is the potential that a crash can occur. Motorcycle accidents occur throughout the Pittsburgh area on a regular basis. While at times they miraculously result in only minor injuries, other times they end in death. A fatal motorcycle accident occurred one afternoon last week in Butler County.
The motor vehicle accident that resulted in death occurred near the Cranberry Mall at the mall's intersection with Freedom Road. According to police, the 63-year-old man was a riding his motorcycle down Freedom Road, headed east, when he encountered a Honda CR-V. The Honda was attempting to make a left turn into the mall when the two motor vehicles collided.
As a result of the crash, the motorcyclist was stuck beneath the Honda. Though he was wearing a helmet and survived the initial collision, once he was extracted from the accident scene and was transported to Allegheny General Hospital, he succumbed to his injuries. As has been the case in numerous other motorcycle accidents we have written about, the person in the car involved in the incident was not hurt in the crash.
It is currently unclear whose fault the accident was. At this point no criminal charges have been filed. An investigation is likely being conducted as police are seeking witnesses to the crash. It is possible that the results of an investigation or witness accounts regarding what happened could lead the relatives of the motorcyclist to file a wrongful death lawsuit.
