Bunny sippy cups recalled due to risk of injury

In the spring, many families celebrate the Easter holiday. As a part of the traditions of many, parents surprise their children in the morning with baskets full of small toys, candy and other fun items that are supposed to be from the Easter Bunny.

Parents throughout the Pittsburgh area may want to give a second thought to an item that may have been included in the Easter baskets of their sons and daughters this year. This is because a sippy cup designed to look like a bunny, sold throughout the nation by Target, is a defective product and has been recalled. The recall was announced last week by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

The seasonal product was sold for $3 apiece prior to the Easter holiday, beginning in February and ending in early April. In total, 264,000 cups sold during that time period. Made in China, they appear to have only been sold at Target stores. Sold in both blue and pink, the lid of each displayed two ears, one straight up and the other folded over.

According to the CPSC, the ear that sticks straight up is responsible for inflicting injuries to at least six children. In addition to the possibility of poking a child in the eye, it has also caused bruises and cuts. The popular retailer has offered a full refund to anyone who returns the product to a store.

While any product that injures a user is troubling, it is particularly upsetting when it is a product designed to be used by a child. When serious injuries occur, it may be worth filing a products liability lawsuit.
