While much of the country has seen unseasonably warm temperatures ahead of schedule, inevitably, Mother Nature has decided to throw cooler temperatures back into the mix. In addition to the concerns people have about keeping their plants from freezing, those facing a commute or who otherwise need to use their automobiles should be aware the cooler temperatures could usher the return of a winter favorite-black ice.
Individuals involved in a series of recent car accidents located in Mercer County, learned that firsthand. Though specific details regarding the number and nature of the accidents are still being gathered, black ice is thought to have contributed to at least a couple of them occurring on Route 58.
In one instance, an occupant of a vehicle involved in a car crash near Schiestle Road was thrown from the automobile. The condition of that person is currently unknown.
Another accident that occurred elsewhere on Route 58, may have resulted in an occupant being stuck in his or her car. Mercer County rescue crews were attending to both of these accidents, and possibly others.
While road crews can apply certain substances to try to limit the presence of black ice on roads throughout the Pittsburgh area, there are certain behaviors that drivers can undertake that could possibly reduce the number of accidents taking place on the slippery surface as well. These behaviors include driving at a reasonable speed and maintaining a safe distance between one's car and the surrounding motor vehicles.
Recognizing that it is in the best interest of all Pennsylvania residents to do what they can to avoid being involved in a car accident, following these guidelines is actually a good idea regardless of the weather.
