Toddler’s death inspires new law

The two-year-old Ohio girl's parents were ecstatic that their toddler was finally diagnosed as cancer free. To celebrate with their daughter, the parents decided they would get out of Ohio and out of doctor's offices and go on a trip to Disney World. Before they left doctors wanted to administer one more chemo treatment just to ensure they killed all the cancer.

That last treatment would prove fatal in an egregious doctor error. For the little girl's IV, the lab tech accidentally filled it with the wrong solution, using 23.4 percent hypertonic solution, which proved to be fatal for the small two-year-old.

The father is devastated but it isn't compensation that he wants for his suffering. He is seeking that no parent endure the pain and hardship he has suffer the last four years in the wake of his daughter's death. The Ohio father sought a change in the University's protocol to prevent an error like this from occurring ever again.

The father is quoted as saying, "I didn't realize that so many of the staff members had developed this bond with my daughter. There was a lot of hurt…They're acknowledging it and they've taken great strides to make sure this doesn't happen over and over again."

The father has started an organization in his daughter's honor with the aim of increasing patient safety. Furthermore, a new law has been written that makes the qualifications for a pharmacy technician more strenuous and requires more education to prevent errors like this little girl's death.
