What does Lipitor do to cause Type 2 diabetes?

There have been numerous studies completed linking Lipitor to the development of Type 2 diabetes. While the chemical process can be difficult to understand, biology is quite simply explained.

In our bodies, all of the food we eat is broken down into sugar, or glucose, which travels throughout our bloodstream. In people without diabetes, the pancreas releases insulin in response to food to effectively reduce blood sugar levels. It also allows glucose to enter the body’s cells, providing those cells with the energy needed for normal, day-to-day bodily functions such as walking, talking, and even critically thinking. People who have Type 2 diabetes, however, either do not produce enough insulin or cannot use the insulin they do produce. As a result of this abnormality, glucose is disallowed from entering the body’s cells but instead builds up in the blood, causing extreme highs in a person’s blood sugar levels. These extremely high levels of sugar in the blood can result in life-threatening health problems, including organ damage, strokes, and heart attacks.

Studies on Lipitor Highlight Diabetes Risk for Women, Statin Users

Then, in 2013, Canadian researchers discovered that people who were taking Lipitor had a 22% greater risk of developing Type 2 diabetes compared to people who took other drugs to lower their cholesterol. These findings piggybacked off of a 2011 study that showed patients who took high doses of Lipitor had an increased risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. The 2011 study tested 4000 adults who did have Type 2 diabetes, but who did have a history of strokes. Researchers found that women who took Lipitor and had a healthy body mass index (BMI) come in at having the highest possible risk for diabetes from the use of statin.
