Bicycle accidents ushered in with spring weather

Spring is in the air throughout the Pittsburgh area which means that those who have been indoors all winter are now spending time outside. The roads that are now clear of snow and ice mean it is possible to take bicycles out and ride them. This of course also makes the likelihood of car accidents involving those riding bicycles to much higher.

A 14-year-old girl was injured when she was hit by a truck as she tried to cross a street. According to the police, the accident occurred in the evening at the intersection where Liberty Street and Peach Tree cross. After the incident the girl was transported to an area hospital. Fortunately her injuries did not seem to be too serious.

As many would likely assume, the driver of the truck who was encased in tons of steel does not appear to have been injured in the incident.

Individuals who witnessed the accident indicated that the girl on the bike was not following the rules of the road. She appeared to be riding in and out of traffic and entered the intersection against the traffic light.

A police officer said that the truck driver will not face any criminal charges.

This accident so early in the season serves as a good reminder to all who are now out-and-about including pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists and individuals behind the wheel of motor vehicles, that we all share the road. Accordingly, it is up to all to keep their eyes on the road and be aware of their surroundings.
