Nearly 2 million coffee makers have been recalled after multiple reports of severe burn injuries caused by the spraying of hot liquid onto consumers. In addition, more than 4 million packages of coffee have also been recalled due to similar product defects and injuries.
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the recall of about 1.75 million Tassimo single-cup coffee makers came after nearly 150 reports of consumers being sprayed with scalding hot liquid, coffee grounds or tea leaves. About 40 of these reports were made by people who had suffered harmful second-degree burns.
Following one such incident, a 10-year-old girl had to be hospitalized and treated for second-degree burns to her neck and face.
The Commission reports that the coffee maker's 'T-disc,' which is the plastic disc that holds the single serving of coffee or tea, has been shown to burst while the coffee maker is brewing the hot beverage.
As a result, about 840,000 coffee makers are being recalled in Pennsylvania and throughout the United States, and about 900,000 are also under recall in Canada. In addition, about 4 million packages of Tassimo espresso 'T-discs' are being recalled after nearly 2 dozen reports of similar issues.
If you have been injured by a Tassimo single-cup coffee maker or any other defective product, you may have a valid personal injury claim against one of several people or companies, including the manufacturer, wholesaler or retailer of the product. Generally, the law requires that a product meet the ordinary expectations of the consumer. If it has a defect or danger that was not expected and that resulted from the anticipated use of the product, you may be able to recover.
