Bus crashes after driver suffers medical emergency

Upon hearing of crashes involving buses, most people fear the worst. This is due to the potential number of injuries that could be sustained when a bus is full. Thankfully a bus accident that occurred last month sent only one person, the driver, to the hospital. Coincidentally the car accident occurred right in front of that hospital.

The accident, involving a Mid Mon Valley Transit Authority bus, appears to be due to a medical emergency the driver suffered as the bus travelled on Route 88. At the time, the bus was headed north and was going down a hill. At the foot of the hill was Mon Valley Hospital as well as a deli a car dealership. The bus ran a red light and was stopped near the dealership. Miraculously it did not hit any other cars in the process.

As a part of the route the bus travelling, passengers are transported into downtown Pittsburgh and to South Hills. At the time the incident occurred there were only two passengers on the bus.

Before being taken to the neighboring hospital, the driver was treated by a medic who was part of a crew in a vehicle that happened to be just behind him. There is no word on what the medical condition was that caused the accident.

According to a Carroll Township police officer the accident could have ended much worse. Had the bus left the road while it was further up the hill it is likely that it would have rolled.
